William Cornelius Van Horne (left) is technically the founder of the Banff springs hotel. It is recorded that he said: “since we can’t export the scenery, we’ll have to import the tourists.” He did just that, thanks to the CPR [Canadian Pacific Railway] . His vision was to set a luxury hotel to accomadate the tourists visiting the newly discovered (November 8 1883) hot springs. The budget in the beginning was $250 000, though when construction ended, a total of 19 million dollars was spent.
The painting of the left is the one referred to in the 1887 information.
